How to fit a Chrome Blanking Plate

The fitting of a chrome (or any) blanking plate is simplicity itself, providing that you are carrying out a straight swap, ie a blanking plate for blanking plate.

If you are carrying out a straight forward like for like replacement all you need do is remove the existing blanking plate, usually held in place with two small screws. I’d usually recommend switching off the power at the main fuse box to be on the safe side, as you never know what might be lurking behind a blanking plate.

Simply remove the screws and the old blanking plate and fit your new chrome blanking plate and new screws.

If you are looking at replacing an existing working socket or switch with a blanking plate, we would recommend seeking the advice of a qualified electrician as this is beyond the scope of DIY.

Notes:

You may find that the screws provided with your blanking plate are too short (very occasionally too long) for your existing back box, in this instance you can usually buy longer (or shorter) chrome screws.
